{"id":1672,"date":"2026-08-18T03:21:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T03:21:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/artistdentallab.com\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T03:24:35","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T03:24:35","slug":"air-abrasion-parameters-for-zirconia-veneers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artistdentallab.com\/fr\/air-abrasion-parameters-for-zirconia-veneers\/","title":{"rendered":"Param\u00e8tres d'abrasion \u00e0 l'air pour les facettes en zircone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSandblast the zirconia\u201d is not a protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is an instruction missing half the information that actually determines what happens to the intaglio surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pressure changes everything.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A zirconia veneer exposed to 50 \u03bcm aluminum oxide at 0.2 MPa is not receiving the same treatment as one blasted at 0.4 or 0.5 MPa, even though both procedures may be casually documented as \u201cAl\u2082O\u2083 air abrasion\u201d on a laboratory ticket or clinical note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So why do we still discuss zirconia air abrasion as though the machine has only an ON switch?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I do not trust generic zirconia bonding instructions that omit particle size, pressure, distance, treatment duration, material generation, and whether the restoration is already fully sintered. Those variables are not laboratory trivia. They can alter roughness, micromechanical retention, phase behavior, microcracking, flexural properties, and eventually how much confidence we should place in the resin-zirconia interface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And veneers make the problem less forgiving because there is less ceramic bulk available to absorb unnecessary abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The useful question is therefore not, \u201cShould I sandblast zirconia?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How aggressively can we air abrade a specific zirconia veneer while improving bonding without creating unnecessary surface damage?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Zirconia Air Abrasion Is a Balance, Not a Roughness Contest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zirconia, or zirconium dioxide (ZrO\u2082), is a polycrystalline oxide ceramic. Unlike lithium disilicate, it does not contain the silica-rich glass phase that makes conventional hydrofluoric-acid etching and silanization so effective for glass ceramics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That chemistry is why <a href=\"https:\/\/artistdentallab.com\/fr\/how-surface-treatment-differs-between-e-max-and-zirconia\/\">surface treatment differs between E.max and zirconia<\/a>. Lithium disilicate follows an etch-and-silane pathway; zirconia bonding usually depends much more heavily on controlled micromechanical surface modification and phosphate-monomer chemistry such as 10-MDP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Airborne particle abrasion helps because aluminum oxide particles strike the zirconia surface and increase microscopic irregularity available for resin cement interaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that explanation is incomplete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The impact also introduces surface stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Push hard enough and the same treatment intended to improve adhesion can produce deeper defects, microcracks, or unfavorable changes in mechanical behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why I dislike the phrase <strong>\u201crougher is better.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is lazy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 2021 study indexed by the U.S. National Library of Medicine tested translucent zirconia with <strong>50 \u03bcm Al\u2082O\u2083 at 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 MPa<\/strong>. The researchers reported their highest shear bond strengths at <strong>0.2 MPa, 15.88 \u00b1 2.70 MPa<\/strong>, et <strong>0.3 MPa, 14.32 \u00b1 1.12 MPa<\/strong>. Yet pressures of <strong>0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 MPa reduced flexural strength<\/strong>, and the 0.5 MPa specimens showed greater surface damage and microcracking. For example, a 2023 study used <strong>50 \u03bcm Al\u2082O\u2083, 0.2 MPa, 10 mm, and 20 seconds<\/strong>, while other published investigations have used 10-second exposures. For zirconia veneers, I would extend the same discipline to the intaglio treatment and intended cementation system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Air Abrade Zirconia Veneers Without Turning It Into Guesswork<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I would document the procedure like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1.
